Canyon families, neighborhood schools.
La Tuna Canyon is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) — the second-largest public school district in the United States. Assigned schools vary by exact street address. Always verify yours before assuming.
Verify your assigned schools first
LAUSD boundaries are specific to individual addresses and can change year to year. Do not rely on a neighbor's word, a real-estate listing, or a page like this one for your final assignment. The official tool is the LAUSD Resident School Identifier, which returns a list of your elementary, middle, and high school assignments — plus any magnet or application-eligible schools — for a given address.

Early childhood, private, and charter options
The canyon and surrounding Sun Valley area include a number of private, parochial, and charter schools — too variable in enrollment policies and operating status to list definitively here. LAUSD's eChoices platform (echoices.lausd.net) lists all LAUSD-affiliated charter and magnet options with current application windows. For private and parochial options, the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce directory and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles school locator are the most reliable starting points.
Practical notes for canyon families
Transportation. LAUSD provides bussing for some elementary and special-program assignments but not for most resident-school enrollment. Canyon parents generally drive, carpool, or walk where geography allows. During fire-season road closures, plan alternate routes — La Tuna Canyon Road has limited through-capacity during emergencies.
Emergency release. During the 2017 La Tuna Fire, schools in the canyon and surrounding foothills were subject to emergency dismissal and precautionary closures. Make sure your emergency contact list with each school is current before fire season, and that at least one listed contact can reach the school even if canyon roads are closed.
Red-flag day planning. Some canyon parents build a "red-flag contingency" into their school-year routines — a pre-agreed pickup plan and meet point if evacuation orders arrive during the school day.
